UCC's 26th General Synod proceedings coming to a computer near you

Interested in the following the action of the UCC's 26th General Synod, but unable to make the trip to Hartford Conn.?  You can stay in touch by tuning in on the web.  The church is planning extensive web coverage of General Synod, June 22-26, when the denomination celebrates its 50th anniversary with record attendance and high-profile speakers.  "We will once again provide gavel-to-gavel webstreaming at ucc.org," says the Rev. Robert Chase, the UCC's communication director. "The world is coming to Hartford, even if it means online viewing from your personal computer."  All plenary sessions at the Hartford Civic Center will be shown in real time and in their entirety, and visitors to the UCC's homepage should be able to locate the streaming with little or no difficulty. (Users with dial-up modems, however, may experience slower response.)

Chase says once-emerging streaming technology now has become commonplace, even expected. "When General Synod met in Providence (in 1999), we had only 300 people watch via the internet," Chase recalls. "Four years later, that number jumped to 3,000 in Minneapolis (in 2003) and then reached 36,000 only two years later in Atlanta."  The number of this year's web viewers is expected to climb, since Synod includes many high-profile speakers. Among those slated to appear are Bill Moyers, Dr. Walter Briggeman, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill., and member of Trinity UCC in Chicago), Marian Wright Edelman and others.  In addition to webstreaming, United Church News and its team of volunteer professional reporters and photographers from across the United States will provide continuously updated news stories, features and photos at during the five-day event. A daily news digest, which will be distributed to Synod goers each morning, also will be available online in .pdf form. Learn more about Synod.

Friends,

Below are the details of the Bridge Coffee House this summer at the Oasis on West Elm United Church of Christ in Lima, OH. Some of you came last year and enjoyed it and I wanted to invite you again. Please feel free to share this information with others and mark your calendar for Thursday, June 21, 2007 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Blessings and Peace,

Jim Oates

The third season of the Bridge Coffee House is on its way!  I wanted all of you to be the first to hear about this summer's Bridge schedule.  Like last summer, the Bridge will run on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 10pm starting on June 21 with Jim Boedecker - back by popular demand.

Last year was a great way to relax, enjoy some coffee, conversation, and a nice evening out.  This year will promise to be the same with some added bonuses.  This year we will relocate the Bridge into the new renovated Parlor and the yard off of Elm street.  With Pastor and other church men at the grill, this season promises to be fun for all ages.  For those of you with children, we will be offering free childcare in our crib room for our little angels.  There is also a fenced in play yard in the rear of the church.  Our caretakers in the crib room will be certified babysitters and will be supervised by an adult at all times.

The dates of the Coffee House are as follows:     June 21, 28    July 12, 19, 26    August 2, 9, 16

Nu-Vizion UCC, Toledo

Dear Ones,

As I write this note, the words of the apostle Paul run through my mind:

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained acces by faith into this grace in which we now stand.  And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.  Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering prouces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."  (Romans 5:1-5)

And we aren't disapointed!  Frustrated?  Yes.  Annoyed?  Perhaps.  Irritated?  Sure.  Curious as to how we should proceed in the midst of this current set-back?  Most definitely.  Yet, we are certain that GOD has brought us through too many trials to let us down with such a small matter as a "dirty baptism" of our building.

For those of you who are unaware, Sunday afternoon as we were arriving to begin preparations for our 1st Anniversary as a chartered congregation, we entered a basement (and primary programming space) almost entirely flooded with rain water and sewer back-up.

Now before I continue, allow me to thank you and to thank the LORD for you.  Your ongoing care, concern, prayers, support and encouragement sustain us in our ministry of Hope, Healing & Community!

In particular, the outpouring of generosity in the last three days has been humbling.  Since we began calling for help Sunday afternoon, members of at least five churches and many individuals have stood alongside of our church family -giving of time and loaning resources of pumps, shop vacs, fans and the like.  We are so grateful.

Now, our volunteers have managed to remove all the standing water (as much as 4 inches in places) and have cleaned the waste/residue from the bathrooms and as much as is visible elsewhere.  However, as the immediate challenges are being dealt with, we begin the work of assessing loses and revising programming according to what spaces are functional or safe to use. As of this afternoon, the carpets aren't drying very quickly (if at all) and mildew/mold are becoming matters of great concern.

We humbly ask your assistance yet again. Do you have a work crew to offer?  Dehumidifiers?  Drying fans?

If you are able to offer any help or have insight in such a clean-up process, please contact us at the church (info listed below). Our ministry TOGETHER is a vital one and we look forward to the opportunity to continue in our Gospel-partnership with one another!  Thank you and, as always... All Peace, Love & Blessings;

your brother & servant in Christ-Jesus,   -will-

Will Stuart  (pastor)

Nu-Vizion UCC, Toledo Summer Program

Summer is here!  We begin 10 weeks of programming for our neighborhood children on June 12th.  Given our recent flooding we are facing several challenges in terms of building space and supplies.  Things are drying out gradually but mold and mildew remain a concern in much of the lower level programming spaces. Additionally, the clean up effort has put us seriously behind in securing needed supplies since our time and energy has been focused on clean up.

Attached is a list of craft supplies needed for the first three weeks of programming.  Ideally, we are looking for a congregation or individual to supply the needed items for either week one or the combined week two and three list.  There will be a latter email with supplies needed for the weeks to follow.

If you can help please respond by email and indicate which list or portion of the list you hope to tackle.  PLEASE wait for a confirmation email before you begin to purchase or procure these items to avoid duplication!

As always we continue to be blessed and encouraged by the generosity and graciousness of our sister congregations and friends of the ministry.  If you have any questions you can call the church # 419-251-9358 and ask for Nichole (our summer program coordinator)  May God Bless and Keep You, Kathryn Helleman

2007 Ohio Conference Annual Gathering Saturday, July 28

Nomination of the new Conference Minister

On Saturday, May 19th the Ohio Conference Board of Directors approved the nomination of the Rev. Robert Molsberry to be the new Conference Minister for the Ohio Conference. Bob will be called by election to this position at the Conference Annual Gathering on Saturday, July 28 at the Villa Milano Conference Center in Columbus.

In recommending Bob to the Board of Directors the search committee wrote: “The Rev. Robert Molsberry brings many gifts and skills to the Ohio Conference that are particularly appropriate during this transitional time and will serve the church well throughout his tenure, if called. He is a person of strong faith. He has demonstrated an ability to adapt well to new situations. He is adept at working with diverse communities and is able to build consensus among those with whom he works. He is a strong communicator. The Committee is convinced that the Rev. Molsberry is the right person at the right time to lead our Ohio Conference.” Plan to be at the Annual Gathering to meet and call Bob as our next Ohio Conference Minister. An informal gathering to meet Bob will be held on Friday evening, July 27th at Westerville Community UCC, 770 County Line Road, Westerville.

Dear Friends:

At the recent NWOA meeting many disaster response kits were assembled and given to the Ohio Conference Disaster Response team. The Conference is fortunate to have committed people who choose to support this ministry.

The Disaster Response Team wants to acknowledge these gifts and assure you they are important and needed.  Kits are prepared and placed in storage for immediate use for the next disaster which seems to happen with surprising frequency.

On those occasions when we have distributed these kits to disaster victims, major gratitude is the usual response.  Surely, this is a small but effective way to share your faith and compassion to those who experience loss.  It is also another example of the timely mission awareness of the United Church of Christ.

Our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in this project and all those involved with the disaster response ministry.

Sincerely,  Jim Ditzler, Volunteer Director, Ohio Conference Disaster Response Team

Transitions in the Ohio Conference Columbus office

When you call or visit the Ohio Conference office in Columbus, you will notice some changes made necessary by the financial constraints affecting us all. The position of Receptionist/Distribution Coordinator, held by Ann Emrick for more than 20 years, was eliminated in early May. Most of her duties will be handled by other staff. Telephone callers are now greeted by a recorded message giving automated options to reach staff members. A list of staff extension numbers is given below.

Staff Extensions:  Pam Brown – 202, Cindy Cox – 214, Joyce Decker – 200, Jill Glass (CSE) – 218, Deborah Hall – 216, Philip Hart – 203, Forrest Hoppe (CSE) – 219, Lesley Jones – 209, Helen Schultz – 207, Cynthia Speller – 212

In another cost-saving measure, the Conference has given up the large and small meeting rooms, kitchen and storage areas leased for the past 12 years at 6161 Busch Boulevard. Savings will total about $20,000 a year. The Conference signed a new lease for the remaining office space that runs until the end of 2008. Meetings usually held in those rooms will need to be held in a local church or other location instead. A small meeting room (space for about 8 people) will be available in a few weeks within the main Conference office.
