General Synod

UCC's 26th General Synod proceedings coming to a computer near you

Interested in the following the action of the UCC's 26th General Synod, but unable to make the trip to Hartford Conn.?  You can stay in touch by tuning in on the web.  The church is planning extensive web coverage of General Synod, June 22-26, when the denomination celebrates its 50th anniversary with record attendance and high-profile speakers.  "We will once again provide gavel-to-gavel webstreaming at ucc.org," says the Rev. Robert Chase, the UCC's communication director. "The world is coming to Hartford, even if it means online viewing from your personal computer."  All plenary sessions at the Hartford Civic Center will be shown in real time and in their entirety, and visitors to the UCC's homepage should be able to locate the streaming with little or no difficulty. (Users with dial-up modems, however, may experience slower response.)

Chase says once-emerging streaming technology now has become commonplace, even expected. "When General Synod met in Providence (in 1999), we had only 300 people watch via the internet," Chase recalls. "Four years later, that number jumped to 3,000 in Minneapolis (in 2003) and then reached 36,000 only two years later in Atlanta."  The number of this year's web viewers is expected to climb, since Synod includes many high-profile speakers. Among those slated to appear are Bill Moyers, Dr. Walter Briggeman, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill., and member of Trinity UCC in Chicago), Marian Wright Edelman and others.  In addition to webstreaming, United Church News and its team of volunteer professional reporters and photographers from across the United States will provide continuously updated news stories, features and photos at during the five-day event. A daily news digest, which will be distributed to Synod goers each morning, also will be available online in .pdf form. Learn more about Synod.

Peace Bubble comes to Northwest!

Singer-Songwriter Jerry Leggett, a UCC minister, will share a musical menu that includes classic peace standards by the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Tracy Chapman, plus a mix of his own soul-stirring Leggett originals. Jerry began a yearlong, nationwide peace mission in January, with stops at 50 UCC churches in observance of the denominations 50th anniversary celebration. His rousing, live music will take place on an intimate sound stage-a converted, tear-shaped, vintage RV that has been christened “The Peace Bubble.”

The tour is “a nonsectarian, nonpartisan effort to celebrate the ideals that make for peace in the heart and peace in the world,” says Leggett.”

sample music can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II4kyCOsllA

Nomination of the new Conference Minister

On Saturday, May 19th the Ohio Conference Board of Directors approved the nomination of the Rev. Robert Molsberry to be the new Conference Minister for the Ohio Conference. Bob will be called by election to this position at the Conference Annual Gathering on Saturday, July 28 at the Villa Milano Conference Center in Columbus.

In recommending Bob to the Board of Directors the search committee wrote: “The Rev. Robert Molsberry brings many gifts and skills to the Ohio Conference that are particularly appropriate during this transitional time and will serve the church well throughout his tenure, if called. He is a person of strong faith. He has demonstrated an ability to adapt well to new situations. He is adept at working with diverse communities and is able to build consensus among those with whom he works. He is a strong communicator. The Committee is convinced that the Rev. Molsberry is the right person at the right time to lead our Ohio Conference.” Plan to be at the Annual Gathering to meet and call Bob as our next Ohio Conference Minister. Transitions in the Ohio Conference Columbus office

When you call or visit the Ohio Conference office in Columbus, you will notice some changes made necessary by the financial constraints affecting us all. The position of Receptionist/Distribution Coordinator, held by Ann Emrick for more than 20 years, was eliminated in early May. Most of her duties will be handled by other staff. Telephone callers are now greeted by a recorded message giving automated options to reach staff members. A list of staff extension numbers is given below.

Staff Extensions:  Pam Brown – 202, Cindy Cox – 214, Joyce Decker – 200, Jill Glass (CSE) – 218, Deborah Hall – 216, Philip Hart – 203, Forrest Hoppe (CSE) – 219, Lesley Jones – 209, Helen Schultz – 207, Cynthia Speller – 212

In another cost-saving measure, the Conference has given up the large and small meeting rooms, kitchen and storage areas leased for the past 12 years at 6161 Busch Boulevard. Savings will total about $20,000 a year. The Conference signed a new lease for the remaining office space that runs until the end of 2008. Meetings usually held in those rooms will need to be held in a local church or other location instead. A small meeting room (space for about 8 people) will be available in a few weeks within the main Conference office.
