Dr. D. Ross Irons, chief of surgery at Bellevue Hospital, passed away on July 2, 2006.  The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 8, at St. Paul U.C.C. in Bellevue with Rev. Cliff Munger and Rev. Gene Hegemier officiating.   A tribute to Dr. Irons including reflections from the medical staff, employees, Bellevue Hospital Board of Trustees, and the community at large was given by Rev. Marv Rettig.  Dr. Iron was an active and life-long member of Lyme Congregational United Church of Christ.  His skill and compassion as a physician, and his faithful discipleship as a member of Lyme Church will be sadly missed.

St. John’s UCC in Genoa

A Saturday afternoon in August 1806 became momentous when five college students gathered in a field to discuss the spiritual needs of those living in Asian countries. When a thunderstorm arose, they took shelter on the side of a haystack and prayed. This gathering came to be called the Haystack Prayer Meeting, launching the modern mission movement.  Global Ministries (of the United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ) traces its mission roots to the Haystack Prayer Meeting.

Members of St. John’s UCC in Genoa, Ohio will celebrate the anniversary of the Haystack Prayer Meeting on Sunday, July 30 in an outdoor worship event at 10:30 a.m.  A large haystack (actually—a straw stack) will be built on the front lawn of the church grounds by members of the church prior to the service to help commemorate the event.  Pastor Steven Simpson will preach a sermon entitled, “Haystack” from the Great Commission text of Matthew 28:16-20.  Global Ministries and other missions supported by the church will be lifted up in prayer.

Lemonade and refreshments will be served after the service and children will be invited to “play in the hay.”  Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, shorts, and sandals are all welcome attire for this outdoor service.
