Work Trip coming in July!

July 7 - 16 Rev. Jeanette Tangeman and her husband, Terry, will lead a work group of 19 other Northwest Ohio volunteers to New Orleans to participate in the on-going restoration efforts being coordinated by the South Central Conference.
The group will be housed at Good Shepherd UCC in
New Orleans.  Their skills might be used right at the church, which was heavily damaged, or out in the neighborhood. Work assignments will be determined on a daily basis, according to specific needs at the time, therefore, flexibility will be the most important component of the group’s experience!
Even now, months after Katrina, the needs of the people are great.  Some of you have asked how you can help with this outreach.  The answer is twofold.  First, the group asks for your prayers - for them as individuals and as a group, and for those in the devastated area, especially those who will touch and change their lives.   Secondly, your financial donations are encouraged and appreciated.  You may wish to sponsor a volunteer by helping to pay their expenses for the week (food, gas money, insurance and $50 per person to stay at the church) or perhaps you would like to contribute toward the purchase of supplies the group will need for their work.  Donations can be sent to Jeanette at
, 19595 Shortline Rd. Wapakoneta, OH 45895, and please specify if this is desired to be used to help with someone's expenses for the trip or supplies.
Work groups have been cautioned not to bring goods into the area in order to avoid storage problems and the need to deal with unusable items.  They are encouraged to purchase supplies, including food for the group’s meals, in New Orleans to help boost the local economy.  Any donations leftover at the end of the week will be used to purchase gift cards for needy residents or for the church to purchase more tools and supplies.
Upon their return some members of the group will be willing to share their experience with church groups.  Please contact Jeanette for a list of possible speakers.

Thank you!

To the NWOA and the Rev. Daniel Busch,

Thank you for your help and support towards my ordination.  I enjoyed the ordination service, and am thankful for Dan, as well as Pat, coming down for it. I know it made a full & busy day for Dan. Thanks also for the bible. It’s nice to have thin leather one, compared to my beat-up paperbacks. I’ve received support and encouragement from many quarters in NWOA and ask God’s blessings upon your work.   In His Service,

Rev. Mitch Reed

This from the Publication Church Treasurer Alert!

What’s New:

“Phishy” requests.  The IRS reminds taxpayers not to share their Social Security numbers or refund amounts with anyone claiming to be the IRS in an email. The phony email scheme is called “phishing,” and it is an attempt to get private information such as Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers from taxpayers. The IRS reminds taxpayers it does not send out unsolicited emails.

Tracking your tax refund.

The IRS has announced that more people than ever – more than 21 million requests so far this year- care using “Where’s My Refund,” the popular Internet-based service used by taxpayers to check on their federal income tax refunds. Taxpayers can securely access their personal refund information through the IRS website, www.IRS.gov. All you need to do is enter your Social Security number, filing status and the exact amount of your expected refund. IRS News Release IR-1006-52

TAX CALENDAR

Important Tax Deadline in July 2006

In addition to the regular semiweekly and monthly withholding requirements, churches should not the following dates in July.

July 1. Now is a good time to review the housing allowance designated for any minister on your staff for 2006. It may be that the allowance designated for 2006 was too low. If so, the housing allowance can be increased for the remainder of the year. Simply have the church board (or other group that designated the original allowance) adopt a resolution amending the allowance. This need not result in any additional compensation being paid to a minister. Rather, a minister’s salary can be decreased by the amount of the increase in the housing allowance. But remember-any amended housing allowance is only effective from the date of the amendment. It cannot be applied retroactively.

July 30. Churches hiring their first nonminister employee (or one or more ministers who report their federal income taxes as employees and who have elected voluntary withholding) between April 1 and June 30 may exempt themselves from the employer’s share of FICA (social security) taxes by filing Form 8274 by this date (nonminister employees are thereafter treated as self-employed for social security purposed).

July 31. Churches having non-minister employees (or one or more ministers who report their federal income taxes as employees and who have elected voluntary withholding) must file an employer’s quarterly federal tax return(Form 941) for the second quarter of 2006 by this date.
