Whether you are looking to update your preaching skills for the 21st Century, delve into New Testament evangel (“good news”) from a historical and cultural perspective with an eye toward insights for today’s church, explore African-American religious history, perspective, and contributions to American life, familiarize yourself with eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism and the issues facing them in today’s world, construct solid foundations for educational ministries by combining theory with application, create effective administrative frameworks and practices, or are simply curious about any of the topics, excellent courses await!

Spring Semester 2006 courses available include (in numerical order):

RL 122 FOUNDATIONS OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Go beyond the organization of church school, running confirmation, and ordering a new adult study book.  Probe the basic components essential to solid, effective Christian religious education in the local church regardless of the church’s size, setting, and demographics, the program, or the age level.  Develop and hone abilities to under-gird practice with theory through individual and collaborative real-world projects.   Discover the WHY that needs to be behind the WHAT and HOW of Christian religious education.  Dr. Marian R. Plant, Instructor.  (3 credit hours) 11-11:50 AM, MWF.

RL 212 TEACHINGS OF JESUS AND LIFE OF THE EARLY CHURCH

Take New Testament study to the next level!  Explore and compare the four gospel writers’ accounts of Jesus’ life and teachings, the different agendas and audiences of their gospels, and what they have to say to 21st Century Christian churches. Examine the letters by Paul and other writers for clues about the challenges and conflicts of the early church. Discover the history of the first Christian communities in their cultural settings.  Gain fresh perspectives for preaching and teaching.  Dr. Marian R. Plant, Instructor. (3 credit hours) 10-10:50 AM,  MWF.

RL 265 BLACK CHURCH IN AMERICA

Learn about American culture and religion from an African-American religious perspective. Rediscover important elements of the history, spirituality, and social involvements of black denominations, churches, leaders and movements. Revisit civil rights struggles led by church folks. Dr. Norman Moxley, Instructor. (3 credit hours), 6-10 PM Alternate Thursdays.

RL 338 Religions of the East

Discover the ancient stories, beliefs and practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Learn about 21st century issues in the life of these religions and in the interface between these religions and Christianity. Connect with future customers, employees and employers in local branches of multi-national corporations – and your neighbors! Dr. Kenneth Christiansen, Instructor. (3 credit hours) 12:45-2 PM, Tuesday/Thursday.

RL 395L Praising God Always: Preaching and Worship in the 21st Century

Identify the unique worship and preaching needs of the 21st century Christian church. Explore different traditions and styles of preaching and worship preparation. Practice creating worship experiences. Craft sermons that inspire and challenge. Rev. David G. Plant, Instructor. (3 credit hours) 6-9 P.M. Tuesday evenings.

RL 475 ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES AND PRACTICES

Dig into the nuts and bolts of organizing and administrating the ministries and programs of a local church, but don’t stop there.  Delve into issues of motivation, human resources, leadership theory, planning and budgeting, institutional structures, and institutional relationships that are critical to the 21st Century church, and essential for effective teaching ministries.  Rev. David G. Plant, Instructor. (3 credit hours) Noon-12:50 PM, MWF.
